The Andaman and Nicobar islands lie in the Indian Ocean in the Southern reaches of the Bay of Bengal, and its capital is Port Blair. The islands are 700 km in length, with 572 emerald islands, 36 of which are inhabited. The tribes of Andaman are of negrito origin and the tribes of Nicobar are of Mongoloid race.

It is administered by a Lieutenant Governor appointed by the Central Government and it does not have a legislature.

These islands were traditionally used as penal settlements and had isolated prisons. Today, it is a centre for tourism and marine sport.  A large scale fishing industry is being developed and processing plants for fish and other marine products.
