Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu is a state in the southern tip of India with its capital Chennai (formerly Madras). It is the centre of Dravidian culture (classical Indian dance, music and literature) and the languages spoken are Tamil, Telegu and English. Education has been the emphasis of the Government in order to bring progress to the state and end superstitions. The area is prone to storms and monsoon rains twice a year. It is one of the most industrialised states and Chennai is also a centre of banking, finance, shipping and manufacturing of automobiles. Chennai is a cosmopolitan city with luxurious hotels developed by international hotel chains, large shopping malls housing the well-known retail chains and several internationally known bars and restaurants. It also has a beautiful beach, churches, temples and colonial buildings reflecting the mix of Hindu and Christian culture. There is more scope for the entertainment industry especially for the youth and budget accommodation. Chennai has the largest number of garment exporters, traders in textiles and silks especially in Tirupur. In Salem there are steel plants. This area is also known for export of fruits like mango and coconut. Rice is cultivated in Tinjore, which is in the Cauvery delta. Tidel Park is a specialised IT park. This state has the second largest film industry in India after Bollywood. It has strong cultural and business links with South-East Asia especially with Malaysia and Singapore due to the Tamil speaking population.
