Punjab This state is in the North West of India on the border of Pakistan. Punjab was divided in 1947 into two halves, one went to India and the other to Pakistan, the division based on religious ground. The Capital of Indian Punjab is Chandigarh, a planned city and centre of business and industry. Almost 60% of the population are Sikhs; others include Jains, Hindus and some Christians. Punjabis have good business acumen and are enterprising. They are ready to travel worldwide, invest, and take business risks. People from this region are generally affluent and many have settled in countries all over the world. Punjab has one of the most fertile lands in the world, and is the main producer in India of wheat, cotton, sugarcane, millet, barley and fruit. It also has textile and flour mills. Today, many other manufacturing industries are located there for electronic goods, automobile parts, precision tools etc. Many export oriented units are situated here. Some of the other important cities include Jalunder, Ludhiana, and Amritsar. |
