Gujarat is second most industrialised state in India and is located in the West bordering Pakistan. It is one of the most prosperous states and is known for its shrewd business entrepreneurs and its finance industry. The Capital is Ghandhinagar and the other main cities are Ahmedabad, Baroda, Surat and Rajkot. The languages spoken are English, Gujarati and Marathi. Majority of the Gujaratis are strict Hindu vegetarians, and many are Muslims. In recent years there has been much tension between the religious communities. There has also been migration of people from other states due to economic opportunities.

The industries include petroleum and natural gas, diamond, shipbuilding and recycling yards, pharmaceuticals and dairy products (Amul).  Agricultural products include cotton, peanuts, dates and sugarcane.

The state also has famous educational institutions like the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad which is supposed to be the best in Asia. Many foreign universities and institutions are planning to locate branches there in the future.
