Goa Goa was a Portuguese territory until 1961 and is known for its pristine tropical beaches and heritage architecture. It capital is Panaji but the courts of Mumbai have jurisdiction over the territory. The languages are Konkani, English and many are familiar with Portuguese. The population are predominantly Catholic or Hindu and are westernised. Its main industry is tourism both domestic and international. It is known for its carnivals, music and dance. It is also a centre for pilgrimage for Catholics especially during the ceremony of the Exposition of St. Francis Xavier’s body. Other industries include liquor distilleries due to low excise duties; mining, canning, fertilizers, shipping and fishing. There are iron ore, bauxite, manganese, limestone and silica deposits. The agricultural crops include rice, cashew and coconut. |
